Gathered Along the Way - You Do That Too!

Gathered Along the Way 🧭

Oh… You Do That, Too?

You know those people who just seem to know?

Where something is. Who to call. What needs to happen before the next thing can happen. And why we absolutely should not push that button.

Thank goodness somebody knows about the button.

We get accustomed to having those people around. At work, at school, in our families. We know their routines, count on their help, and hand things over with a cheerful ā€œyou’ll know what to do with this!ā€

And off we go.

I’ve been thinking about that. How much we count on people without really understanding what we’re counting on them for. We know they handle ā€œall that.ā€

ā€œAll thatā€ covers an impressive amount of territory, doesn’t it?

Somewhere inside it are the things they remember so we don’t have to. The extra phone call. The planning ahead. The little problem they caught before it grew legs and came looking for the rest of us.

We see a day that went smoothly. They could probably tell us a few things about how it got that way.

Then something changes.

A retirement. A move. A different job. A child off to school. Someone needs time away, or their own life needs more of their attention, or in some cases - they leave this world way too soon.

And there we stand.

Oh… you did that, too?

🧭 Compass Heading: Make Room to Notice

Life doesn’t always give us a nice little heads-up and the actual 6 months it would take to even get a glimpse of what a person actually does. Sometimes the routine changes before we’ve given much thought to what holds it together.

But even before anything changes, I wonder how much we’re missing.

We know what someone does for work—but do we know what they enjoy about it? Or what follows them home at the end of the day?

We know someone as Mom, the teacher, the coworker, the neighbor. Have we left room to learn who they are outside the part they play in our lives?

What are they excited about? What’s been hard lately? What would they love to have a little more time for?

People have whole worlds going on while we’re asking if they know where the extra paper is.

And listen… sometimes we do need the paper. But we can come back for the conversation. 🧔

Life is People. šŸŒŽ

šŸ¤Ž Compass Thought

This is a little nudge for me, too.

I can love people, appreciate them, and still get so busy moving through my day that I give them the distracted version of myself. Ask how they are while my brain is already halfway down the B corridor.

We’ll catch up when things settle.

Meanwhile, ā€œwhen things settleā€ apparently has no forwarding address.

So maybe we start smaller. Sit for a minute. Ask another question. Stay long enough to hear the answer—even when it takes us somewhere we weren’t expecting.

And when we notice what someone carries, maybe we learn how to carry a little of it ourselves.

ā€œShow me how that works.ā€

ā€œI can take care of that part.ā€

Those are good words to follow a thank-you.

I’d like the people around me to have room to rest, grow, try something new, or simply have a off day without everything coming apart. And I’d like them to know I enjoyĀ them—their stories, their company, their funny little ways.

Even the one who tells the long version.

Let’s be real…some days, I am the one who tells the long version. šŸ˜‚

šŸ“– Compass Verse

ā€œBear one another’s burdens, and thereby fulfill the law of Christ.ā€
— Galatians 6:2, NASB

šŸ‘£ This Week’s Bearing

Think of someone you count on in your everyday life.

This week, give them a little more than the passing ā€œHow are you?ā€ Ask about something you’ve never taken time to understand. Thank them for something specific. See if there’s a way to lighten their day.

No grand production needed. Pull up a chair.

šŸ™ Compass Prayer

Lord, thank You for the people who share my ordinary days. Help me slow down and pay attention to who they are, what they carry, and what I’ve been too distracted to notice. Give me willing hands when I can help and a listening heart when they need to talk. When life changes in ways I haven’t prepared for, help me meet those changes with grace. Let the people You’ve placed beside me feel loved in my company. Amen.

There’s a lot of life tucked into the people we think we already know.

I’d like to leave a little room in my Tuesday to hear about it. 🧔

Find your way home.
