Stop Saving the Good Stuff
I have a philosophy about the good stuff:
USE IT.
The pretty dishes.
The beautiful linens.
The fancy serving pieces.
The candles.
The things you bought because they made you smile.
Use every bit of it.
And if you know me, you know I absolutely do. 😂
I am not saving the good dishes for the Queen.
For one thing, I don’t believe she’s coming.
And if she did, she’d be eating off the same plates as everybody else.
Maybe with an extra napkin.
I’m thoughtful like that. 😂
I love a beautiful bowl. I love pretty things. I love all the coffee mugs, too. (Don’t ask how many. I’m not telling.) I love the little details that make a home feel warm and welcoming.

And I enjoy them on an ordinary Tuesday, at Sunday supper, when the grandkids are coming or when it’s just Mike and me.
Because why would I buy something I love and then spend the rest of my life protecting it from being enjoyed?
I know some people keep beautiful things tucked away for special occasions, and I understand. Some pieces hold memories. Some are fragile. Some are irreplaceable.
But I’ve always believed the memories we make using something can be every bit as precious as the memories attached to where it came from.
A little wear doesn’t bother me.
A scratch?
That’s probably a story.
A stain on the tablecloth?
Apparently somebody enjoyed dinner.
And a broken dish?
Okay, I might be a little sad about that one.
Still, I’d rather have a table full of people, laughter and a chipped plate than a cabinet full of perfect dishes nobody ever touched.

The occasion doesn’t have to be special before we make it beautiful. Sometimes we create the occasion simply by the way we show up.
We put a little extra care into dinner.
We set the table.
We light a candle.
We invite somebody over.
We pull up another chair.
Suddenly, an ordinary evening becomes something worth remembering.
Not because the meal was elaborate, everything matched or the house was spotless.
Good grief. If we’re waiting for that, some of us may never entertain again. 😂
It matters because we took the time to enjoy what was right in front of us.
That’s where the lesson lives: don’t postpone the enjoyment of a beautiful life.
I don’t want to save all the fun for vacation, all the celebrating for birthdays or all the good conversations for when we have more time.
I want to enjoy the ordinary days while they’re happening.
Eat the good food.
Take the drive.
Stop at the little shop.
Gather around the table.
Laugh until somebody snorts.
Make memories on a perfectly unremarkable Monday.
Because those ordinary days make up most of our lives, and I don’t intend to spend them waiting for something better to come along.
I’ve got a perfectly wonderful life sitting right here.
And I plan to enjoy the tar out of it. 🧡
🧭 Compass Note
Don’t wait for a special occasion to enjoy the life you’ve been given.
Use the good dishes. Light the candles. Invite the people. Take the trip when you can. Make an ordinary dinner feel like a celebration.
The beautiful things in our lives aren’t meant to replace the people and moments that matter. They’re meant to be enjoyed alongside them.
Sometimes the most special occasions are the ones we never bothered to put on the calendar.
Notice more of what’s already good. Love the people around your table well. Gather often.
📖 Compass Verse
“Here is what I have seen to be good and fitting: to eat, to drink and enjoy oneself in all one’s labor in which he toils under the sun during the few years of his life which God has given him; for this is his reward.”
— Ecclesiastes 5:18 NASB
🙏 Compass Prayer
Lord,
Thank You for this beautiful, ordinary life.
For tables that gather people, food that nourishes us, homes that hold our memories and the laughter that fills the spaces between.
Help me never become so busy looking forward to the next big thing that I overlook the goodness of what’s happening right now.
Teach me to enjoy Your gifts with gratitude, share them generously and hold them loosely.
May the things I own never become more important than the people I love.
And may I remember that an ordinary day can become extraordinary when it’s filled with love, laughter and a thankful heart.
Amen. 🧡
Find Your Way Home.
