Thankful for a Good Laugh
There are days when everything is going beautifully.
And then there are days when the only reasonable response is to laugh.
Because crying would ruin your mascara.
And frankly, youāre not starting over with that.
š
Iāve always loved people who can find something funny in the middle of ordinary life.
Not because everything is wonderful.
Not because nothing serious ever happens.
But because a little laughter can give us room to carry things that feel heavy.
There is something wonderful about sitting with people you love and laughing until you can barely finish the story.

You know the kind.
Somebody starts telling it.
Somebody else remembers another detail.
Then somebody makes the mistake of looking at the person who was actually there.
And itās over.
Nobody can breathe.
Nobody can finish a sentence.
And somebody is making a noise that no respectable adult should be making in public.
š
Those are the moments.
Not the perfectly arranged photographs.
Not the carefully planned entertainment.
The ridiculous, wonderful, unrepeatable moments when everybody forgets to be anything except themselves.

And Iāve noticed something else.
A good laugh can make people feel close again.
It reminds us that even in difficult seasons, joy hasnāt necessarily disappeared.
Sometimes it just needs a little room.
Now, Iām not suggesting that laughter fixes everything.
It doesnāt.
There are things that deserve tears.
There are situations that require serious conversations, difficult decisions, and plenty of prayer.
But I donāt believe we have to choose between acknowledging lifeās difficulties and appreciating its joy.
We can do both.
We can have a hard week and still laugh at something ridiculous.
We can be concerned about tomorrow and still enjoy dinner tonight.
We can carry real responsibilities and still find something wonderfully silly about the way the dog is sleeping.
Good grief.
Sometimes the dog is the entire entertainment budget.

š
So today, Iām thankful for laughter.
For people who know how to bring it.

For the stories that get funnier every time theyāre told.
For the moments when a heavy day becomes a little lighter.
And for the wonderful reminder that joy doesnāt always arrive with a reason.
Sometimes it just shows up at the kitchen table and makes somebody snort.

š§ Compass Note
Joy and difficulty can exist in the same season.
Donāt feel guilty for laughing when life isnāt perfect.
And donāt underestimate the gift of bringing a little lightness into somebody elseās day.
Laughter wonāt solve every problem.
But it can remind us that our problems arenāt the only things happening.

š Compass Prayer
Lord,
Thank You for laughter.
For the people who bring joy into our lives and the ordinary moments that become wonderful memories.
Help me recognize the goodness tucked into difficult days.
Give me sensitivity when someone needs comfort and a cheerful spirit when someone needs encouragement.
May I never become so burdened by lifeās responsibilities that I forget how to delight in the people and moments Youāve given me.
Amen. š§”
