Sabbath Stillness - The Porch Light

Sabbath Stillness - The Porch Light

🕊️ Sunday | Sabbath Stillness

The Porch Light

There’s something about a porch light left on.

Maybe it’s because it says something without making a sound.

Somebody is expected.

Somebody is welcome.

Somebody has a place to come home to.

I love that.

I’ve always thought a home should feel like a place where people can land.

Not necessarily a perfectly quiet place.

Good grief.

With family, grandchildren, cats and dogs, quiet can be a fairly ambitious goal.

😂

But a place where people know they belong.

Where the coffee can be made.

Where another chair can be pulled up.

Where you can arrive tired, happy, worried, excited, or carrying a story that needs telling.

And you don’t have to become somebody different before coming through the door.

I’ve been thinking about that little porch light.

How something so ordinary can represent something so important.

Welcome.

Belonging.

A place waiting for you.

And it makes me think about the way Jesus described the father’s response to the returning son.

The son had made mistakes.

Plenty of them.

He’d wandered.

He’d wasted.

He’d come to the end of himself.

And when he finally turned toward home, his father didn’t stand there with a list of everything he’d done wrong.

He ran to meet him.

That gets me every time.

Because I think we sometimes imagine that returning to God requires us to get ourselves together first.

Straighten things out.

Find the right words.

Make ourselves presentable.

Then come home.

But that’s not the picture Jesus gives us.

The father was watching.

And when he saw his son coming, he moved toward him.

Not because the son had earned a celebration.

But because he was loved.

Maybe that’s something we need to remember on this Sabbath Sunday.

We don’t have to arrive with a polished story.

We don’t have to pretend we haven’t wandered.

We don’t have to explain away every mistake before turning toward the One who loves us.

We simply need to come.

And I think there’s something beautiful about carrying that same spirit into our own homes.

Making room.

Leaving the light on.

Being the kind of people others can approach without fear of being turned away.

Not because we have all the answers.

But because we know what it means to be welcomed with grace.

🧭 Compass Note

Home is more than a place. Sometimes it’s the welcome waiting for us there.

Leave room for people.

Be generous with grace.

And remember that God’s invitation to return isn’t reserved for the days when we’ve managed to get everything right.

The light is on.

Come home.

📖 Compass Verse

“But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and felt compassion for him…”

— Luke 15:20 NASB

🙏 Compass Prayer

Father,

Thank You for Your grace and for the welcome You extend when we turn toward You.

Thank You that we don’t have to arrive with perfect words or a perfect record.

Help me remember the tenderness of Your love.

Make my home a place where people feel safe, valued, and welcome.

Give me patience with those who are finding their way and humility to remember the times I’ve needed grace myself.

And when I wander, remind me where home is.

Amen. 🧡

Find Your Way Home.
