The Loaf That Didn’t Need Saving

Or: Bo Bo’s Unauthorized Sourdough Review

Twisted Compass Original Story | From My Kitchen Table | Redemption Stories

Some recipes become family favorites.

Some become traditions.

Some become stories you tell forever.

And apparently, some are stolen from the kitchen counter in the middle of the night by a dog who has absolutely no respect for the recipe-development process.

Welcome to the first official installment of Redemption Stories. 😂

🧭 Compass Heading

Sometimes the thing we think needs saving has something else to teach us.

It began with one tiny omission.

I forgot the salt.

In two very large loaves of sourdough—one plain and one jalapeño-cheddar.

If you bake sourdough, you already know this isn’t exactly a minor detail.

By morning, the dough had opinions.

The structure wasn’t right. It was difficult to handle. I knew immediately that something had gone sideways—and then I remembered.

Salt.

Or, more accurately…

the complete absence thereof. 😳

Still, I shaped those unruly girls, tucked them into their baskets and hoped for the best.

Because sometimes that’s all you’ve got.

🍞 And Then She Came Out Beautiful

Against all reasonable expectations, both loaves baked up beautifully.

But the jalapeño-cheddar loaf?

Ohhhh, she was gorgeous.

Deep golden crust.

Blistered edges.

Cheese bubbling through.

Little jalapeño slices tucked into the top.

She looked wildly confident for someone missing a major ingredient. 😂

And, of course, she was my favorite.

So naturally, the rehabilitation discussions began.

Surely, we could save her.

Warm slices.

An irresponsible quantity of salted butter.

Maybe a little flaky salt.

And if she truly wasn’t good?

Cube it.

Olive oil.

Garlic.

Herbs.

Plenty of salt.

Croutons.

Nothing wasted.

We even gave the whole idea a name:

Redemption Stories.

Recipes that didn’t quite go according to plan but found their way into something delicious anyway.

It was perfect.

There was only one problem.

Bo Bo had not been consulted.

🐾 The Unauthorized Taste Test

Sometime during the night, Bo apparently decided the quality-control department was understaffed.

He counter surfed.

And remember…

there were two loaves.

A perfectly respectable plain sourdough loaf.

And my gorgeous jalapeño-cheddar loaf.

Bo had options.

So naturally…

he picked my favorite.

I mean, why wouldn’t he?

Apparently the man has standards. 😂

Mike woke up to the crime scene.

My beautiful jalapeño-cheddar loaf had been absolutely savaged.

Huge hunks missing.

Crust ripped away.

A single jalapeño dangling.

Bread demolished.

What remained eventually made its way to the trash.

And that probably should have been the end of it.

Except…

I had a blog post to write. 😂

So yes.

I retrieved the victim from the trash.

Placed what remained of her back onto the Twisted Compass cutting board.

And documented the savagery.

Because if your dog destroys your favorite gorgeous saltless jalapeño-cheddar sourdough in the middle of the night and you don’t photograph the evidence…

are you even a food blogger?

😂😂😂

There would be no warm slice.

No salted-butter intervention.

No flaky salt.

No croutons.

And definitely no official human taste test.

Bo had rendered his decision.

Bo Bo — Verified Counter Surfer

Could have used salt. Ate it anyway.

😂😂😂

🐾 The Morning-After Report

Once the laughing settled down, there was one other matter.

Bo had eaten a rather impressive quantity of jalapeño-cheddar sourdough.

And while Bo considered his work complete, the rest of us were waiting to see whether his unauthorized culinary excursion was going to have…

consequences. 😳😂

I’m very happy to report:

Bo Bo had no adverse reaction.

Thank the Lord. 🙏🧡

Happy.

Normal.

Entirely unrepentant.

Apparently Bo possesses questionable judgment, excellent taste and a remarkably forgiving constitution.

Management’s official review:

Would not recommend as kitchen staff. 😂

♥️ But Then I Thought About It…

I had spent all that time thinking about how to redeem the loaf.

Something important was missing.

I’d made a mistake.

Therefore, surely it needed fixing before it could still be considered good.

And isn’t that something we do far beyond the kitchen?

We look at the project, the relationship, the season, the dream—sometimes even ourselves—and immediately begin cataloging what’s missing.

This wasn’t supposed to happen.

How do I fix it?

Sometimes something genuinely does need correcting.

We learn, adjust and try again.

But sometimes…

the thing we thought needed redeeming was already good.

Not perfect.

Not what we planned.

But still capable of bringing joy.

Still part of the story.

Bo certainly seemed to think so. 😂

Maybe redemption doesn’t always look like repair.

Maybe the mistake remains part of the story.

And maybe God meets us there, too.

🌈 And Then There Was the Rainbow

And because apparently this story wasn’t finished yet…

there was the rainbow.

After the forgotten salt.

After two surprisingly beautiful loaves.

After Bo bypassed the plain one and conducted his unauthorized midnight review of my favorite.

After Mike discovered the aftermath.

After I retrieved said aftermath from the trash for photographic documentation. 😂

And after we were very grateful that our little counter surfer was perfectly fine…

there was a rainbow.

That stopped me.

Because Scripture gives us the rainbow as a sign of promise.

“When the bow is in the cloud, then I will look upon it, to remember the everlasting covenant between God and every living creature…”
— Genesis 9:16 NASB

Not a promise that everything will go according to plan.

Not a promise that we won’t make mistakes.

And apparently not a promise that somebody won’t climb onto the kitchen counter and eat the evidence. 😂

A reminder that God is faithful.

The rainbow didn’t make the loaf whole again.

It didn’t put the salt back.

It certainly didn’t return the portion Bo ate.

It simply made me look up.

And remember.

God keeps His promises.

Sometimes, right in the middle of imperfect bread, ridiculous dogs and plans that go sideways, God gives us something beautiful enough to make us stop and notice.

🧡 Compass Thought

The loaf never got its salted-butter makeover.

It certainly never became croutons.

But it gave us a story.

Bo gave us a very good laugh.

And the rainbow gave me a reason to look up and remember:

God is faithful—even when life doesn’t look quite like we planned.

🙏 Compass Prayer

Lord, help us learn from what needs correcting without believing every imperfect thing is ruined.

Give us grace for what we cannot fix, eyes to see the good that remains, and enough stillness to notice Your faithfulness along the way.

Amen.

🧭 Take This With You

Not everything that turns out differently needs to be thrown away—or even fixed. Sometimes we need enough grace to see the good that’s still there, and enough stillness to look up and remember Who has been faithful through all of it.

And perhaps…

when there are two loaves, move your favorite farther back on the counter.

Bo has standards. 😂🐾🍞🌈
